"The Fourth of July Weekend and Lincoln Center" - New York, NY |
I
stayed in Manhattan over the Fourth of July weekend and enjoyed it so much! Went
to see the "Sound of America" New York Philharmonic: Summertime Classics at Avery
Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center on the evening of 4th of July. Needless to say,
the program included music associated with America such as Bernstein and Copland.
Above all, Jon Kimura Parker's performance of "Rhapsody in Blue" was brilliant.
And as I had expected, the concert finished gorgeously with the "Stars and Stripes
Forever." Outside after the concert, it was still bright but I headed for Midtown,
one of Macy's fireworks areas. It was not as crowded as Tokyo's Sumida River Fireworks
which is chokingly crowded every year. Fireworks per se was very dynamic and of
course very "American." Over this weekend, the Empire State Building was lit up
in red, white, and blue, which looked so energetic. |
There
are some districts that I particularly like in Manhattan. One of my favorite districts
is the Upper West Side which extends from Columbus Circle (at W 59th St.) to 110th
St. lying between Central Park and the Hudson River. Listed below are my favorite
spots and I recommend: |

Riverside
Park W 91 St. | This
is the location where the very last scene of "You've Got Mail" was filmed. Tom
Hanks as Joe Fox and Meg Ryan as Kathleen Kelly meet here in Riverside Park at
91st Street. |
||
Cafe
Lalo 201 W 83rd St. | This
cafe was featured in "You've Got Mail" also. I tried an old-fashioned cheesecake
in a great atmosphere and of course, it tasted so good! |
||
Barnes
& Noble 2289 Broadway | I
saw a lot more local people here at 2289 Broadway than one near Lincoln Center.
You wouldn't realize how spacious the upper floor is if you just stay on the gound
level. I very much liked the 2nd floor, especially at the end of this floor, there
were sofas and it was very cozy. |
||
Fishs
Eddy 2176 Broadway | The
store specializes in mugs, tableware and some vitage products. Most or them are
priced reasonably. I bought a milk pitcher with the Manhattan skyline motif. I
loved this neat, cute store! |

Zen Palate 2170 Broadway |
This Asian restaurant is not too Japanese but not too Chinese either; it is very New York! Everything here is so healthy and yummy. I also got a chance to go eat at a store near Union Square. |
Barnes & Noble 1972 Broadway |
My very favorite B&N store of all B&N stores in Manhattan and I think it is one of the biggest one in NYC. On the top floor, you can take a rest at Stabucks but it always seems hard to find a seat. CD's and DVD's are located on the basement level. |
Neuhaus 2151 Broadway |
If you are looking for high quality chocolates in this area, I recommend this Belgian chocolatier. | The Juilliard School 60 Lincoln Center Plaza |
If you like music or performing arts, there is always something around Lincoln Center. The world-famous Juilliard School has a small bookstore where you can buy gifts or souvenirs. It is situated at the opposite side of Barnes & Noble. |
Beard Papa 2167 Broadway |
Surprised to find this Japanese chain store of cream puffs in the US. I often stop by this outlet near my house in Tokyo. Inside was exactly the same. They told me that there was another store in East Village. |
Dean & Deluca Cafe 10 Columbus Circle |
After browsed some mags and books at Borders, I had a cup of coffee here. This cafe is inside a huge complex building called Time Warner Center that has been built recently. (as of July 2004) |
