On my way to the Berliner Philharmonie to check out for tonight's Argerich concert, I found the unique traffic light installed at Potsdamerplatz. It was the replica of the oldest traffic light in the world. Back in October 1924, a traffic police man sat in a little cabinet inside the top of this light and manually switched the lights to change color. It was said that this was necessary because even as early as 1900, as many as 20 thousand cars passed through here at Potsdamer Platz! |
And as I was waiting that traffic light to turn green to cross the street, I saw a fragment of the Wall sitting. Lots of graffiti covered the Wall.
After a several minute walk from the Potsdamer Platz, yellow, tent-like structures began to be seen. I could instantly tell this is the Berliner Philharmonie! Home to the Berliner Philharmoniker orchestra, and the mecca for all classical music fans! |
I checked the map at the entrance to see which building is the Großer Saal, the Grant Hall where the concert would be held that evening. |
|
I was already so excited. Right is the the Großer Saal, the Grant Hall, and the left is the Kammermusiksaal, the Chamber Music Hall, a small version of the Grant Hall in the architecture and acoustic wise. They are like brothers. The concert hall is still highly regarded for its original design and acoustic qualities. |
Since there were still a few hours until the concert started, there was no body around and it was so quiet.
I was looking around a bit, immersing myself in there. Soon, a man with the tuba appeared from nowhere. Perhaps, a member of the Berlin Philharmonic...? | I took a quick peek inside the foyer of the Grant Hall. There were lots of posters of bits of scenes of the Berliner Philharmoniker displayed on the walls and pillars.
Back to Potsdamer Platz, I picked up some food stuff for dinner at this huge mall named, the "Mall of Berlin," obviously named after the "Wall of Berlin," before the concert at the Berliner Philharmonie. | This Mall got everything from shops to restaurants and theaters. I could have spent the whole day here, but I saved my energy for tonight's concert.
