On the early morning of the day before I left Leipzig for Berlin, I visited the Nikolaikirche, St. Nicholas Church, founded in the 12th century, the oldest and the largest church in Leipzig. | J.S. Bach was also the music director of this church, not just the Thomaskirche, and many of his works were played for the first time here. | |
Scenes from the New Testament were pictured in the sanctuary. The wooden crucifix on the right is the oldest piece of art in Leipzig. |
The pillars were painted in pastel pink and the palm-tree-like columns were in pastel green. I imagined Bach playing that pipe organ up there for a minute. |

With a little sadness, I left the city of classical music for Berlin via ICE 694 at 11:16. ICE's 75-minute Leipzig-Berlin run was very smooth, quiet, and comfortable obviously because my seat was in First Class where most passengers are business travelers and tend to be quieter. Moreover, mine was literally in the Quiet Zone. |
