Before I climbed Fiesole, a hilltop village on the outskirts of Firenze, I wanted to overview it up from the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, which is normally simply called Il Duomo di Firenze. As I asceded the stairs near the top of the Duomo, there was a narrow walkway that I could take a close look at the incredible fresco titled Il Giudizio Universale, the Last Judgment by Giorgio Vasari, depicted on the inside of the dome. It looked quite different from the Last Judgment by Michelangelo.

And I finally made it to the top of the Duomo! I'm not usually afraid of heights, but I was very scared up there not just because it was much higher than I thought it would be, but mainly because of its low fence, which made me feel insecure. I'm smiling in this picture like I'm not scared at all, but I'm actually squatting because if I stand up, I thought I would fall off the Duomo. The height of the fence is not high enough - it was well below my chest.

Incidentally, my back is the view of the Palazzo Vecchio in the Piazza della Signoria.

I quickly glanced down and saw people way down there walking. The curve of the dome made me feel even more scared and dizzy. I backed away from the fence and looked straight ahead and saw the Campanile de Giotto, Giotto's bell tower which is actually standing adjacent to the Duomo.

Taking a closer look, I saw people on top of it. I also could see the cage protected by wire. I decided to try up there later.
