From an open overlook, I further headed up a short set of stairs to la Chiesa e il Convento di San Francesco, the Church and Monastery of San Francesco. I reached the cross! Here is the highest point. I sat under the cross and found myself, in that moment, thinking about how small I felt amid the sky with views of seemingly endless mountains ahead of me. |
The Church and Monastery complex was built in the 14th century and given to the Franciscans in 1407. |
I entered inside the church. The interior is simple and basic with an arch. |
The San Francesco statue stands at the side of the nave. |
San Francesco is depicted on the wall of cloisters with a well. |
It also has a charming courtyard garden with a small pond. |
After spending some time in peace and tranquility up here, I headed back down the hill to return to the piazza. While I waited for the bus to return to Firenze, I strolled around the campanile of la Cattedrale di San Romolo, the Cathedral of St. Romulus. |
