As I walked toward the Battistero degli Ariani, the sky cleared up and blue skies emerged finally! Just like the Battistero Neoniano, the structure of the Battistero degli Ariani was octagonal in shape, but it was even smaller. This was built in the late 5th century under Theoderic. |
Inside was very simple. No particular decorations of the internal walls, and yet, the cupola is adorned with the mosaics, showing the 12 apostles ringed around a centerpiece depicting the Baptism of Christ. The mosaics are evidently inspired by the iconography of the Baptistery of Neon. |
The theme of the central medallion was quite similar to the one I saw at the Battistero Neoniano, depicting Christ immersed to the waist in the waters of the River Jordan and being baptized by St. John the Baptist, but Christ, St. John, a personification of the Jordan River as well as the 12 apostles are cartoonish and looked a little cute. | |
