Chicago - Architecture

There had been nothing special here at Michigan Avenue between Randolph and Monroe as long as I can remember; there might have been traintracks or parkinglot... Anyway here in 2004, Millennium Park opened. It has various kinds of artistic venues and sculptures. The Greek-style columns called Peristyle can be found at Wrigley Square. When I was there the fountain was not in operation but there is one in front of the Peristyle. You can barely see it in picture as above.

A number of concerts and events are held here at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion. It was nice and interesting to walk under the trellis of these steel pipes on the Great Lawn. This trellis, I hear, generates a great acoustic sound.

The Art Institute of Chicago - it goes without saying that it is one of the most famous and authoritative art museums not only in the States but on earth. The two lions still stand at the entrance of the Art Institute.

In front of the Art Institute, there is the "School" of the Art Institute of Chicago. It has a few other school buildings near here.

And Orchestra Hall, home of the world's prestigious Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO), is across the street from the Art Institute. As some of you may be aware, a well-known conductor, Georg Solti had been director of CSO until 1992. When I entered the lobby, I saw some orchestra members (not CSO's) proceeding to the stage. It is not recognizable from the above picture, but the names of five composers (Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, and Wagner) are inscribed above the second floor of façade - you can take a closer look from the right balcony of the Art Institute.

Connecting to the Orchestra Hall, there is a souvenir shop called the "Symphony Store." I think it is just fun even if you are not into classical music. It offers a wide selection of gifts, jewelry, books, CD's, and lighting accessories, etc. The above picture is a view of the Art Institute from the Symphony Store.
